This sketchbook is the result of spending the year rereading and enjoying William Steig’s The Lonely Ones while simultaneously going through a difficult time with my family. I thought I’d try, much like Steig had, to create drawings with quick brushwork that were subconscious. Before I knew it, I had a bunch of scrawls and useless ink splotches. But among them, a few drawings emerged that spoke to me, and they seemed to fit together. So, I started titling the drawings and putting them in order. On a design note, I still like how, like the subject matter, the words slowly descend page by page. – Mo Willems
